Only the 18-unit certificate and the degree are Title IV eligible. The 12-unit certificate is a transcripted credential but is not aid-eligible.

Each certificate is the previous one plus two courses, so a student can stop at any rung with something to show, or keep going. Two AI courses a term is a comfortable pace beside work.

AI 80 (the capstone) recommends AI 70 first. A student in a hurry can take AI 70 and AI 80 in the same term, since recommended preparation is advisory, and finish in three semesters.

Not ready for credit? COSA 660 Fundamentals of Generative AI (54 hours, noncredit). Free, noncredit, no enrollment fee: the noncredit twin of AI 45, listed in the AI 60 outline as recommended preparation (as AI 645). A way in for a student, or an employee, who is not ready to enroll for credit.

Pursuing the degreesample plan to 60 units, full-time, four semesters

About 15 units a term. At half that load the same plan takes eight semesters; the order stays the same. AI courses go in the recommended order, the supporting courses sit beside the AI course they help most, and two or three general-education courses a term keep the load balanced.

Total 61 units against a 60-unit minimum (29 core, 27+ general education, the rest elective). A plan is a starting point: which general-education courses satisfy each area, what double-counts, and what transfers in is settled with an LBCC counselor. Full requirements in the LBCC catalog.

General education and electivesLBCC-GE areas with example courses; recommended focus electives

LBCC-GE is 27 units: nine areas, one course each, 3 units minimum per area. Every LBCC associate-degree sheet in the current catalog lists the general-education options as LBCC-GE or Cal-GETC, 27–34 units; the 34 is Cal-GETC, for students who plan to transfer. Some approved courses are 4 units (for example ENGL C1000 and STAT C1000), which only reduces the electives needed. Units for the major may double-count toward GE; a counselor confirms which.

Industry credentials, earned alongside the courses

Open, public credentials from companies students will meet in job postings, which complement the LBCC certificates and degree. Most are free; two are inexpensive proctored exams. None is required, and none carries LBCC units, but a student who finishes AI 45 with an IBM badge and a Microsoft certification beside it has more to show an employer. Select a card for details.

Degree requirements

The A.S. is 60 units: the six AI courses (18 units) and three supporting courses, CS 31 (Introduction to Computer Science – Python, 4 units), COSP 38 (Database Concepts, 4 units), COSN 250 (Cloud Computing in Amazon Web Services, 3 units), for a 29-unit core; then general education (LBCC-GE, 27 units, or Cal-GETC for transfer) and an elective as needed to reach 60 degree-applicable units.
